The Lakewalk is Duluth’s waterfront promenade — a paved, mostly flat path that hugs Lake Superior for miles. From Hostel du Nord you can be walking beside the biggest freshwater lake on earth in under ten minutes.

Where it goes

The path runs from Canal Park north along the shore, past the Rose Garden and Leif Erikson Park and on toward the eastern neighborhoods — several continuous miles of lake on one side and the city rising on the other. Benches, public art and the old ore-dock ruins punctuate the route.

Because it’s separated from traffic, the Lakewalk is ideal for a morning run, an easy stroll after dinner or a rented-bike cruise. It connects directly into Canal Park, so you can loop the bridge, the piers and the shoreline in a single outing.

When to go

Early morning is magic — the sun comes up straight off the water and the path is quiet. Summer evenings draw walkers and cyclists; autumn frames the lake in color; and even winter has its own stark beauty when the shore ices over.

From the front desk

  • Head out for sunrise — the lake faces east and the light is unreal.
  • Rent a bike in Canal Park and ride the length of it.
  • Lake Superior stays cold; a windbreaker is smart even in July.
