Glensheen is Duluth’s grand historic estate — a 39-room mansion built for the Congdon family in the early 1900s, set on manicured grounds right on the shore of Lake Superior. Guided tours walk you through a remarkably preserved home, and the lakeside gardens are open to wander.

The house and grounds

Completed around 1908, the mansion has been kept close to its original state, from the woodwork and furnishings to the boathouse and formal gardens on the lake. Now owned and operated by the University of Minnesota Duluth, it’s one of the best-preserved historic house museums in the region.

Even if you don’t tour the interior, the grounds along the water are a lovely place to walk, and the estate’s setting on London Road makes it an easy stop on the way up the shore.

Tours

Tours range from the classic main-house visit to longer, in-depth experiences that reach the upper floors and servants’ spaces. Buy tickets ahead in busy season, and check current times before you go.
