Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before staying at Hostel du Nord.
Is Hostel du Nord right for me?
Hostel du Nord is ideal for travelers who value affordability, community and location. Our guests include hikers, cyclists, road trippers, students, remote workers, couples and North Shore adventurers. If you enjoy meeting fellow travelers and don’t mind shared spaces, you’ll feel right at home here.
What is a sleeping pod?
Unlike a traditional hostel bunk bed, our sleeping pods are enclosed on three sides and feature a privacy curtain at the entrance. You’ll have your own cozy sleeping space — with a reading light, outlet, fan and secure locker nearby — while still enjoying the social atmosphere and affordability of a hostel. All pods are located in shared dorm rooms.
Is the hostel quiet at night?
Yes. Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM until 7:00 AM in all sleeping areas. During quiet hours, guests are expected to keep noise to a minimum so everyone can rest comfortably. Common spaces remain available, but we ask all guests to be respectful of those who are sleeping.
Do you have private rooms?
We offer a limited number of semi-private rooms in our Annex building, located just across the alley from the main hostel. These rooms have walls for privacy, but the walls do not extend to the ceiling, so some sound may travel between rooms. Annex guests share bathrooms, a kitchen, dining space and lounge areas, and have full access to the main hostel — including the sauna, outdoor fire pit and common spaces.
Do you have a kitchen or common spaces?
Yes. We have a fully equipped shared kitchen with refrigerators, microwave, full-size stove and oven, and all cooking and dining essentials. There are several cozy common spaces to relax, play games and meet fellow travelers — plus a cedar sauna.
Are bathrooms shared?
Yes. The main hostel has five lockable bathrooms shared across two floors, each with its own shower, toilet and sink. The Annex building has men’s and women’s shower rooms as well as two private bathrooms.
Do you offer extended-stay discounts?
Yes. Guests who book directly through our website receive a 15% discount on stays of 7 nights or longer. Extended stays are subject to availability and must be booked directly with Hostel du Nord.
Do you have parking?
Limited on-site parking is available for $10 per night on Friday and Saturday nights only, first-come, first-served. Additional public parking ramps and street parking are available nearby.
Can I store my bike or recreational equipment?
Yes. We offer secure outdoor storage for bikes and recreational equipment in a lockable shed. The shed is keyed and accessed by staff only, so please coordinate with our team to store or retrieve items. Hostel du Nord is not responsible for loss or damage to personal equipment.
Is the hostel accessible for guests with mobility differences?
Hostel du Nord offers partial accessibility. Two of our three floors have step-free access: the first floor via a guest-only entrance leading directly to the sleeping area, and the second floor (lobby) via a ramp at the rear entrance or through elevators in the connected skywalk system (note: the skywalk is closed nights and weekends). The Annex building, where the semi-private rooms are located, is not accessible.
