Canal Park is the heart of Duluth’s waterfront, and the Aerial Lift Bridge is its landmark. From Hostel du Nord it’s a flat ten-minute stroll to stand at the ship canal and watch thousand-foot lake freighters glide in from Lake Superior while the bridge rises to let them through.

What makes it special

The Aerial Lift Bridge is one of only a handful of its kind in the world. Its span lifts straight up — roughly 135 feet — in under a minute to let ships pass into the Duluth-Superior harbor, one of the busiest freshwater ports on the continent. When the horn sounds and the deck climbs into the sky, everyone on the pier stops to watch.

Around the bridge, Canal Park is a walkable district of restaurants, ice-cream shops, breweries and boutiques, all wrapped by the Lakewalk. It’s the easiest possible introduction to Duluth, and it’s right on your doorstep.

Making the most of a visit

Time your walk with an incoming or outgoing ship for the full spectacle — the free Duluth Shipping News boat schedule (posted around Canal Park and online) tells you when freighters are due. Walk out onto the pier toward the lighthouse for the classic photo, then double back for a pasty, a cone or a pint.

It’s a genuine four-season destination: summer crowds and lake breezes, blazing fall color on the hillside behind town, sea-smoke and ice in deep winter.

From the front desk

  • Ask us at the desk when the next big freighter is due — we watch the shipping schedule.
  • The pier gets windy and cool even in summer; bring a layer.
  • Sunrise over the lake here is worth the early alarm.
