Duluth’s hillside is laced with wild green space, and two spots stand out. Hawk Ridge, on Skyline Parkway, is one of the premier raptor-migration overlooks in North America. Chester Creek carves a wooded gorge with waterfalls right through the middle of town. Both are minutes from the hostel.

Hawk Ridge

Each fall, tens of thousands of hawks, eagles and falcons funnel along the Lake Superior shoreline and stream past Hawk Ridge, making it a world-class spot to witness the migration. On big September and October days, naturalists are on hand counting birds and answering questions. The overlook itself gives a huge view of the lake and city year-round.

Chester Creek & in-town trails

For a quick leg-stretch, Chester Park follows its creek up a shaded gorge past small waterfalls and stone bridges — a pocket of wilderness a short walk from downtown. It connects into Duluth’s broader trail network, including the Superior Hiking Trail, so you can go as short or as long as you like.

From the front desk

  • Come to Hawk Ridge on a crisp fall day with north winds for the biggest flights.
  • Chester Creek is a fast, close escape when you have an hour.
  • Bring water and decent shoes — the gorge trails get rooty.
